Job Title:

Director of Music in Sunday Worship

Job Description:

SUMMARY

To direct, shape, and oversee Wallace’s ministries of music for Sunday Morning Worship in coordination with the Senior Pastor at Wallace Presbyterian Church (WPC).

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the music for Sunday worship. This includes musicians/volunteers needed for that Sunday’s service, selecting songs for each Sunday service, and collaborating with the audio/visual team for sound.
  • Working within the bounds of Wallace’s blended worship style. We currently sing a balance of hymns from the Trinity Hymnal and pieces composed by Indelible Grace, City Alight, Keith Getty, and Sovereign Grace Music on Sunday morning. We would love this position to lead the congregation in new songs and compositions as well as singing out of the Trinity Hymnal.
  • Organizing, scheduling, and instructing volunteers using Planning Center Software (or something similar) as needed.
  • Ministry team collaboration with the senior pastor and staff regarding song selection for Sunday morning and the development of liturgy as gifts allow.
  • Recruit and develop future musicians from within and outside the church as needed.
  • Oversee worship team practice as needed.
    • If possible: Participate in a weekly meeting with staff and/or the pastor for oversight care and planning.
  • Participation in the community-life of the church. We strongly desire this person to become a member of Wallace, thus, giving them the best opportunity to know and serve the body of Wallace as a staff person.
  • Build relationships with local artists and musicians (ie, University of Maryland students) from the broader community.

Position Qualifications:

  • Deep, personal faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Musical gifts in the area of voice and/or piano or guitar.
  • Ability to speak in front of a large group of people and lead the congregation in our music.
  • Humility to lead, organize, and serve our existing music team members.
  • Flexible and collaborative spirit in worship planning with the pastoral staff.
  • Creative and able to lead a team of musicians/volunteers that produces the best quality sound and music for Sunday Worship.
  • Must be able to play with musicians who do not read music.
  • Must be able to adapt to song variations easily.

WHAT WE VALUE IN OUR WORSHIP AND MUSIC MINISTRY:

We value gospel-centered, Jesus-exalting worship. We want our worship service to represent the good news about Jesus in word and sacrament each Lord’s Day.

We value the ancient and the not-so-ancient in our worship. Whether it is new hymns set to old music or old hymns set to new music, or hymns right out of the hymnal, we do not believe in one music tradition being “baptized” as best for worship, for God’s people. We believe music is formative and shapes us into the people of God as far as its words are theologically sound and not in conflict with scripture.

We value people. We want our worship team to lead our congregation not only in worship but by the example of their prayerful fellowship together. We want our worship team to enjoy one another as much as they enjoy making music.

We value multi-generational worship. On any given Sunday we have people ages infant to 90 in the congregation. This means we enter worship with an expectation that there are as many preferences in music as there are people and that reaching multiple generations means singing songs that might often be unfamiliar to us and even challenging at times. Therefore, as a congregation we seek to practice mutual submission to one another, submitting our music taste and preferences to others, trusting that the music we sing on Sunday, whether we are familiar with it or not, is primarily glorifying to God, corporately accessible, and spiritually edifying as a follower of Christ.
