Music Director

PRIMARY JOB DESCRIPTION: In coordination with the Lead Pastor, the Music Ministry at G+P will lead our church in the continued development of a beautiful, biblically rich, and spiritually expressive worship service so that God is glorified and his people are fully engaged.

Our Musical Style. G+P blends lots of styles. We major music in a Sovereign Grace or City Alight style incorporating contemporary gospel as well. We’ve developed a robust sound where we want every song to have some gospel groove. We will vary from traditional hymns with new arrangements to all eras of contemporary songs, to gospel. We frequently lead with gospel/jazz piano, and accompany piano with electric/acoustic guitar, bass guitar, drums, sometimes violin or brass, and always 3-5+ vocalists. It’s a fun, varied style.

Our Church Culture. Grace+Peace Church wants to be a place where all kinds of people discover God’s grace and peace. We say we have a gospel culture where people get better than they deserve. So, we delight in the gospel, do things beautifully, and enjoy not taking ourselves too seriously. And we have folks from all kinds of church and cultural backgrounds. This has helped our church to intentionally grow toward a multiethnic and multicultural suburban expression of God’s kingdom (Rev 7). We desire to continue to express that musically.

The three areas of responsibility listed below may be combined into one person’s job or be handled by multiple people depending on the gifts, experience, and availability of the particular candidate(s).

Worship Leadership
●  Lead the band in achieving the musical style described above.

●  Direct the band in its practice and during the worship service making various musical decisions in

preparation for the worship service.

●  Lead the band on Sunday morning ensuring that set-up and practice is accomplished so that each musician is equipped to play with excellence.

●  Verbally direct the congregation through providing: cues for standing/sitting/singing/etc., pray at

appropriate times, improvise musically.

●  Use your presence to welcome and invite worshippers into greater participation.

●  Cultivate a healthy and warm atmosphere among musicians.

●  Recruit, train and coordinate music ministry team members—vocalists & instrumentalists – to expand G+P’s musical reach.

Music Administration:

●  Use Planning Center Online (PCO) to organize and manage G+P’s song list, including: weekly

song selection (with the Lead Pastor), research of new music, and providing appropriate sheet

music to musicians.

●  Use PCO to coordinate and keep a schedule of musicians.

●  Ensure that the weekly slides are correct and match the music/service.

●  Build and print the weekly program.

Piano Player:

●  Display the ability to lead through gospel/jazz piano musical elements.

●  Play weekly with the worship band.

●  Display the ability to read music, match the musical style described above, and occasionally improvise.

●  Must be willing to participate in the band’s practice sessions (likely monthly).

●  Must possess sufficient musical theory knowledge/training to develop cohesive transitions between individual songs or segments of the worship service.

Other potential duties which are unassigned at this time:

●  Train, coordinate, and oversee sound technicians for weekly worship services and livestream.

●  Record, edit, and upload the sermon audio to the podcast feed.

●  Plan and lead the annual Multicultural Corporate Worship Conference.

●  Develop a plan and program to produce a G+P podcast.

●  Attend the weekly worship/sermon meeting to participate in the creation of the week’s service.

●  Provide new arrangements of songs to match G+P’s style, instrumentation, and specific occasion.

●  Ensure that G+P has access to all necessary music equipment and research any new purchases.

●  Setting up the sound system for off-site events.
