Dr. Ligon Duncan shares The Heresy of Orthodoxy by Drs. Andreas Kostenberger and Michael Kruger. The Heresy of Orthodoxy examines and challenges the “Bauer thesis” of early Christianity.

Hello. I’m Ligon Duncan, and this is RTS Book Notes. Today, I want to tell you about a volume called The Heresy of Orthodoxy. It’s written by Dr. Andreas Kostenberger and our own Dr. Mike Kruger. Dr. Kruger, of course, is the President and Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte. He’s an expert in the subject matter of this book.

Theologians and scholars have talked about the “Bauer thesis” of early Christianity for many years now. It’s an errant thesis that basically argues that the earliest Christianity had a diversity of theological opinions that were eventually narrowed to an orthodoxy that suppressed this wonderful diversity that preexisted it. And this book shows why that thesis is wrong. In fact, what it’s doing, this book is really affirming what Tertullian said in the second century, that truth always precedes error, and orthodoxy always precedes heresy. And so, Dr. Kostenberger and Dr. Kruger respond to that thesis and expound for you the way the truth actually grew and was defended in early Christianity. The Heresy of Orthodoxy by Crossway. Thanks for listening to RTS Book Notes.
