JACKSON, Miss. – Reformed Theological Seminary announces with deep sorrow the passing of Dr. Paul D. Kooistra, former Associate Professor of Education and Homiletics at RTS Jackson, who entered the presence of his Savior on July 1, 2026, at the age of 83 after a courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Kooistra faithfully served Christ’s church as a pastor, educator, missionary leader, and college president, leaving a lasting legacy marked by grace, conviction, and a passion for the global advancement of the gospel.
Dr. Kooistra served on the faculty of RTS Jackson from 1975 to 1985, helping to equip future pastors and church leaders through his teaching in education and homiletics. During his decade at RTS, he became known as a gifted instructor, thoughtful mentor, and faithful servant committed to the authority of Scripture and the mission of the church.
Born in Duluth, Minnesota, Dr. Kooistra earned degrees from the University of Minnesota, Columbia Theological Seminary, and the University of Alabama. His ministry included pastoral service in Florida, teaching at Belhaven College and Reformed Theological Seminary, and significant leadership roles as President of Covenant Theological Seminary, Coordinator of Mission to the World, and later President of Erskine College and Seminary. Throughout every season of service, he remained steadfast in proclaiming the doctrines of grace and encouraging believers to trust in the sufficiency of Christ.
“I first met Paul in 1985 and had the privilege of knowing him for more than forty years. During that time I watched him serve Christ faithfully as a seminary president, missionary leader, college president, husband, and father,” said Dr. Ligon Duncan, Chancellor and CEO of Reformed Theological Seminary. “Paul had tremendous drive, but also genuine humility, pastoral warmth, and a profound sense of our need for grace. We rejoice that he is now with the Savior whom he served so faithfully. Our love and prayers are with Sandi and the entire Kooistra family as they rest in the sure hope of the resurrection.”
Dr. David Irving, President of RTS Jackson, added, “Dr. Kooistra’s years at RTS helped form a generation of ministers who continue to serve faithfully around the world. We grieve his passing while giving thanks for a life that so clearly reflected the mercy and faithfulness of our Lord.”
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sandi, their children and grandchildren, and countless friends, former students, and ministry partners who were blessed by his faithful witness and encouragement.
Reformed Theological Seminary invites the broader church to join in praying for the Kooistra family and in giving thanks to God for a servant whose life and ministry testified to the power of the gospel and the sustaining grace of Christ.
