RTS Orlando Launches Institute for the Study of Ancient Texts

Oviedo, Fla. — Reformed Theological Seminary’s Orlando campus has announced the launch of the Institute for the Study of Ancient Texts (ISAT), a new academic center designed to strengthen scholarship and equip the church in the interpretation and understanding of ancient manuscripts and biblical texts.

The institute brings together a collaborative team of RTS faculty scholars committed to advancing research and teaching in areas related to the languages, literature, and historical contexts of Scripture. The initiative reflects RTS Orlando’s ongoing commitment to rigorous theological education rooted in God’s authoritative Word and shaped by the riches of the Reformed tradition.

“At RTS, we are deeply committed to equipping the church through careful and faithful engagement with the Scriptures,” said Dr. Ligon Duncan, Chancellor and CEO of RTS. “The Institute for the Study of Ancient Texts reflects our conviction that deeper study of the original languages and historical transmission of God’s Word strengthens classroom instruction, enriches scholarly research, and prepares students more fully for lifelong ministry.”

ISAT seeks to serve both students and the broader church by fostering deeper engagement with the original sources of the Christian faith. Through lectures, events, and academic resources, the institute will provide opportunities for pastors, scholars, and lay leaders to explore the development of biblical texts and the historical worlds in which they were written.

“The Institute for the Study of Ancient Texts exists to help students and the broader church engage Scripture more deeply by understanding the ancient languages, manuscripts, and historical contexts through which God has preserved His Word,” said Dr. Greg Lanier, RTS Orlando professor of New Testament. “Our hope is that this work will not remain merely academic, but will strengthen preaching, teaching, and faithful discipleship in congregations around the world.”

As part of its inaugural programming, the institute will host invited lectures and scholarly events designed to highlight the richness and diversity of ancient biblical texts. These initiatives aim to equip ministry leaders with deeper historical and linguistic insight that can serve the life of the church.

Located on the Lucas Campus in Oviedo, RTS Orlando has served students preparing for ministry since opening as the first accredited Protestant seminary in Florida in 1989. Today, the campus continues to build on its legacy of theological scholarship by launching initiatives like ISAT that connect academic excellence with practical service to Christ’s church.
