Assistant Pastor for Families and Youth

Job Description:

Primary responsibility will be to provide pastoral oversight and leadership for the discipleship of married couples and families with children in the home, and to provide leadership in the ministry of our youth. Understanding that it is the primary responsibility of the parents to evangelize and disciple their children (Deut. 6:7; Eph. 6:4), this position will be centered on building a culture of discipleship for families. A major goal is to develop a community of common convictions grounded in Scripture.

This is a full-time salaried position with benefits. All areas of ministry for family and youth discipleship will be developed in coordination with the pastor and staff according to the vision and oversight of the Session.

Purpose:

  • To lead, develop, and grow a ministry of married couple and family discipleship.
  • To lead, develop, and grow a ministry of youth discipleship.
  • To provide spiritual oversight, care, and strategic direction for all staff and
    volunteers involved with family and youth discipleship.
  • To encourage and nurture parents and their children to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ and His body, the church.

Position Qualifications:

Responsibilities will include (but not limited to):

Family Ministry

  • Encourage, equip, and resource parents to take the lead discipleship role in the lives of their children, especially helping parents to develop key skills necessary for this task.
  • Disciple fathers to shepherd their families according to Scripture
  • Increase and evaluate the disciple-making opportunities for parents and
    children at Westminster (in conjunction with Children’s Director).
  • Create, organize, and lead opportunities for intergenerational fellowship and relationship building in the life of the congregation.
  • Teach and lead in areas of family discipleship as needed. Provide leadership and pastoral insight for the Christian Growth and Nurture committee of the session.

Youth Ministry

Large group

  • Meetings throughout the year with structured offering of some combination of teaching, praise, activities, snacks and/or small groups.

Small Groups

  • Weekly age and gender specific groups to be held during the summer. Small groups may be adult or student led.

One-on-ones

  • One-on-ones will be done with each student a minimum of 4x per year. This responsibility can be shared with adult volunteers. One-on-ones though primarily relational in nature should have a discipleship concern.

Fellowship

  • A variety of outings that take in consideration of the interests of the whole group planned at appropriate times.

Service

  • Yearly mission trips, weekly summer service days, and occasional service opportunities during the school year.

Conferences

  • Retreats and Summer conferences every year.

Communication

  • Communications with parents and students will be timely and professional.
  • Every effort will be made to communicate via multiple platforms to both parents and students including text, email and social media.

Pastor

  • Officiate at weddings, baptisms, and funerals as needed (upon ordination)
  • Participate in the regular pastoral care and shepherding of the congregation with special attention to the lives of married couples, families with children, and youth group.
  • Preach when needed on Sunday morning.
  • Assist in liturgy each Sunday morning.
