Description of Organization
What is now Living Hope Presbyterian Church (OPC) began in 1990 as a Bible study in Bath, Maine, overseen by Second Parish OPC in Portland, Maine. On Easter Sunday, 1991, the Bible study began having evening worship services, led by a rotation of retired OPC ministers and ruling elders, at the North Woolwich Methodist Church.
In 1993, the Rev. Roger Ramsey was called to serve as a part-time pastor and served in that capacity for three summers. Morning worship services, held in various locations, began in the spring of 1993. The congregation then adopted the name Merrymeeting Bay Orthodox Presbyterian Church. During the winters, when Rev. Ramsey was away, worship services were again led by a rotation of OPC ministers and ruling elders. In 1996, the Rev. Gordon H. Cook, Jr. was called to serve as an evangelist for Second Parish OPC, laboring in the Brunswick area at Merrymeeting Bay OPC. Soon thereafter, Merrymeeting Bay OPC officially became a mission work of the Presbytery of New York and New England, with oversight still provided by Second Parish OPC.
In 2000, Merrymeeting Bay OPC became a separate organized congregation of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, and Rev. Cook was installed as pastor. Rev. Cook brought the church many blessings. In 2004, Michael Fettes was called by the congregation to serve as a teacher. Rev. Fettes retired due to disability in 2013. In that same year, John Kramer was called to serve as a teacher. He was ordained and installed by the Presbytery of New York and New England in 2014. In 2015, the church purchased its current building on Pleasant Street in Brunswick. At the same time, the church changed its name from Merrymeeting Bay OPC to Living Hope Presbyterian Church (OPC).
For 34 years, whether as Merrymeeting Bay OPC or Living Hope Presbyterian Church (OPC), the church has been a consistent and faithful Reformed witness for Christ in the mid-coast region of Maine.
