VIENNA, Va. — Reformed Theological Seminary is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. N. Gray Sutanto from Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology to Associate Professor of Systematic Theology. The promotion is effective June 1, 2024.
Dr. Sutanto joined the faculty of RTS Washington in 2020 and teaches courses in systematic theology, apologetics, philosophy, and more. Since 2023, he has directed RTS Washington’s Initiative on Neo-Calvinist Scholarship.
“Gray is a prolific scholar who has distinguished himself as a major voice in the revival of Neo-Calvinist scholarship in global theological circles,” said President Dr. Scott Redd. “His interests and writing expand well beyond studies in Herman Bavinck to encompass the broader field of systematics. I am grateful for his faithful engagement with our community and look forward his continuing contributions to the RTS Washington campus.”
A native of Jakarta, Indonesia, Dr. Sutanto holds a B.A. from Biola University, an MAR from Westminster Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh. His doctoral work focused largely on the writings of Dutch Reformed theologian Herman Bavinck. His other research interests are broad and include modern Protestant theology, prolegomena, the relationship between philosophy and theology, analytic theology, and Christianity and culture.
A prolific writer and editor, Dr. Sutanto has released several books. Most recently, he is the co-editor with Dr. Cory Brock of the T&T Clark Handbook of Neo-Calvinism (T&T Clark, 2024). He is the author of a forthcoming volume on Herman Bavinck’s theological anthropology.
“Gray’s theological and biblical insight has been an inspiration to students and faculty alike,” said Dr. Tommy Keene, Academic Dean. “His creativity and collegiality foster the best kind of academic community, one which is informed, thoughtful, collaborative, and winsome. I am thankful that he will be shaping the next generation of church leaders here at RTS Washington.”
Dr. Sutanto is ordained in the International Presbyterian Church. He is married to Indita Probosutedjo and together they have a daughter.
