(JACKSON, Miss.) — Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Charles Wingard from Associate Professor to Professor of Pastoral Theology, effective June 1, 2021. Dr. Wingard also serves as dean of students and dean of chapel for the Jackson campus.
Dr. Wingard joined RTS in 2014, after spending 28 years as an ordained pastor in the PCA and OPC, serving congregations in North Carolina, Massachusetts, and Alabama. He received his B.A. in political science from the University of the South, his MDiv from Vanderbilt Divinity School, and his DMin from Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.
Dr. Ligon Duncan, President of RTS Jackson, said, “I’ve said before that Charlie Wingard is the consummate Reformed pastor. He blesses our students at RTS Jackson as he models pastoral ministry to them inside and outside of the classroom. His promotion to full professor is well-deserved.”
In 2016, Dr. Wingard also began serving as Senior Pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Yazoo City, Mississippi. He recently wrote Help for the New Pastor: Practical Advice for Your First Year of Ministry (P&R, 2018), and also blogs at https://charliewingard.com/, where he reviews books and provides tips for seminarians.
Dr. Miles Van Pelt, Academic Dean at RTS Jackson, commented, “Dr. Wingard is a model pastor-professor! With over four decades of ministry experience, I can think of no one better to train students for pastoral ministry.”
Dr. Wingard’s Students
Ann Marie Huling, one of Dr. Wingard’s teaching assistants, shared, “Dr. Wingard shows genuine care for the students of RTS. He displays a true pastoral heart in the way that he serves and shepherds, by seeking to know each student and care for their needs, all while teaching the Word of God with wisdom and excellence.”
Colton Underwood served as a pastoral intern with Dr. Wingard in Yazoo City. He said, “In whatever engagement he is employed, Dr. Wingard approaches everything with a desire to encourage, to equip, and to edify men and women in the Lord that they might be better servants in his kingdom. While he may deny it, he is a treasure trove of rich wisdom and insight to all those seeking a call within and surrounding God’s church.”
