At RTS Atlanta we advocate that theological education is just as essential and valuable for women as it is for men.  In our experience, many women are interested in cultivating their love of God’s Word through a seminary education, but some begin to hesitate and wonder how it will serve them practically.  We are strong believers that women who teach Bible studies, minister to people in need, care for their families, and share the Gospel benefit just as much from the knowledge gained through seminary courses as men do.  We are convinced that women with a deep understanding of theology make better teachers, disciplers, counselors, wives, and mothers as they themselves grow in their knowledge and love of God.  Our female students come from a range of ministry experiences and backgrounds, from campus ministry to anti-trafficking work, from overseas missions to adoption placements.

As women from varied ages, stages, and backgrounds, we love gathering to encourage and uplift one another as we seek to know the Word of our good God more fully.

Testimonials

“Through my time in seminary, my understanding and love of God’s Word has been enriched as I have beheld its mystery, power, beauty, and relevance to our present context. It has given me a longing to share the richness of the scriptures with others so that their hearts may be pierced as mine has.

I greatly admire the way my professors desire to reflect the heart of God by addressing pastoral and controversial issues with grace and humility for the larger goal of pursuing the unity of the Church.

The Center for the Study of the Bible and Ethnicity, as well as other Bible classes (like The Prophets, Genesis to Joshua, and Hebrews to Revelation), has set me on a path of considering what it practically means to be sojourners and witnesses to Christ in our world.

The community of people at RTS, from the students to the staff, has been one of my favorite parts of seminary.”

– Laura Sharrett, Master of Arts Biblical Studies, 2019

We asked some of our other past and current female students to share why they chose RTS Atlanta and how their seminary courses have affected their lives and ministries.

You had a lot of seminary options in Atlanta; why did you choose RTS?

“I chose to come to RTS after looking at a number of seminaries throughout the United States.  I knew that I wanted an education in Biblical Studies, and I found that RTS had the most comprehensive program.  I really wanted a program that would teach the Bible for what it is – the inerrant Word of God – in a manner that would challenge me both academically and spiritually.  Based on a few classes that I took as a ‘special student,’ I knew that I would get that kind of teaching at RTS.”

What have you been able to do with your seminary degree/coursework?

“My primary role is that of a homemaker. My two daughters (3 and 9 months) have never asked to see my seminary degree or read my papers, yet as I walk through ‘How did Jesus make my crimson stains white?’ and ‘Is God in this elevator?’ I can see the value of the professors [and ultimately God] who condescended to teach me great truths at a level and compassionate way that I could understand and apply. My family just moved overseas to do missions work. Here I am still a homemaker, but also have the added joy of ministering to neighbors, women in the market and training women in the fledgling church to teach others.”

“Though I absolutely use what I’ve learned in context with pregnant women and adoptive families in my paid ministry position as an adoption social worker, I’ve found the study of theology to be incredibly applicable in relationships with family members, friends, mentoring other women, and even in casual conversations with strangers.”

How has your RTS training equipped you for ministry?

“RTS brought me consistently back to the Bible (which never contradicts itself), Christ (who is the center of our theology) and my utter dependence on the Lord. To see saints (my professors, the staff, those I was required to read) truly lean into the Lord as they went about great things for God was humbling and encouraging.”

How has your time at RTS enriched your personal relationship with the Lord?

“The study of theology has been amazing therapy for my soul.  The depravity that comes with ministry work can be overwhelming. Having a deeper understanding of the Gospel and how the ‘messiness’ of my cases (and life’s messiness in general) fits into the scope of redemptive history is what maintains my motivation to serve broken women. It keeps me ever-mindful of my own brokenness, my identity in and union with Christ, and continuously points to the depth and breadth of God’s character. It has brought me to a greater place of worship.”

“While it can be hard in the midst of class to realize everything that I’m soaking in, in the days, months, and years afterwards, I realize how much of my trust in the Lord has been shaped by what I’ve learned at RTS.”
