JACKSON, Miss – Reformed Theological Seminary mourns the passing of Dr. John W. P. Oliver, Professor of Homiletics and Practical Theology Emeritus at RTS Charlotte, whose long ministry as a pastor and professor left a lasting mark on RTS and the church.
Dr. Oliver joined the faculty of RTS Charlotte in 1999, teaching preaching, worship, sanctification, and missions until his retirement in 2013. He brought to the classroom decades of pastoral experience and a deep conviction about the importance of biblical preaching.
“Dr. Oliver understood that preparing men for ministry meant preparing them to open the Word of God faithfully before his people,” said Dr. D. Blair Smith, president of RTS Charlotte. “Students learned from a godly man who had spent decades preaching and shepherding the local church yet always with an eye to reaching the nations. His pastoral wisdom and emphasis on personal holiness profoundly blessed our campus, and we remain grateful for the many years he invested in our students.”
Before joining RTS, Dr. Oliver spent nearly 35 years in pastoral ministry, including 29 years as senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Augusta, Georgia. He also served as pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Montgomery, Alabama, and as assistant pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Chicago.
His ministry extended beyond the local church and classroom. A frequent conference speaker in the United States and abroad, particularly in Africa and Asia, Dr. Oliver also served on the boards of Columbia International University, Westminster Schools of Augusta, Mission to the World, and Bailey Manor Christian Retirement Center.
Dr. Oliver earned a B.A. from Wheaton College, a B.D. from Fuller Theological Seminary, and a Th.M. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He also received Doctor of Divinity degrees from Western Conservative Baptist Seminary and Columbia International University.
Students who studied under Dr. Oliver often remembered his emphasis on the “primacy of preaching.” Amid the many responsibilities and expectations placed upon a minister, he taught future pastors to keep the proclamation of God’s Word central to their calling. His teaching reflected the priorities that characterized his own ministry: expository preaching, Christ-centered worship, personal holiness, and a concern for missions.
“John brought the perspective of a seasoned pastor to theological education,” said Dr. Robert J. Cara, provost of Reformed Theological Seminary. “He understood both the weight and the privilege of pastoral ministry and helped students prepare for that responsibility with seriousness and care. His years at RTS strengthened our work of preparing servants for the church, and we thank the Lord for his service.”
For decades, Dr. Oliver devoted himself to preaching God’s Word, shepherding the church, and preparing others for ministry. Reformed Theological Seminary gives thanks to God for his life and service and joins his family, former students, colleagues, and friends in mourning his passing with the hope of the resurrection.
A memorial service for Dr. Oliver will be held on Thursday, September 24, at 11am at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, GA.
