Dr. Hugh Whelchel died on March 29, 2024 following a battle with ALS. Dr. Whelchel served as the Executive Director of Reformed Theological Seminary, Washington from 2005-2012.
A native of Florida, Dr. Whelchel earned a B.A. in sociology from the University of Florida and later left a career in the IT industry to lead RTS Washington. He earned a Master of Arts (Religion) degree from RTS in 2010. In 2011, Dr. Whelchel founded the Institute for Faith, Work & Economics, a non-profit Christian think tank in the Washington, D.C. metro area, serving as its Executive Director and later as Senior Fellow. He was also influential in the founding of The Fellows Initiative and in the church fellows movement throughout the United States.
He completed a DMin from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in 2022, focusing in workplace theology, ethics, and leadership. Ordained as a ruling elder in the PCA, he was a leader at McLean Presbyterian Church for many years.
“Hugh left an indelible mark on RTS Washington while serving as Executive Director for seven years, putting it on a sure footing for the future,” said RTS Washington President Dr. Scott Redd. “He was an innovative leader, a faithful churchman at McLean Presbyterian Church, and a good friend.”
Dr. Whelchel is survived by his wife, Leslie, and various other family members. A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. on April 13 at McLean Presbyterian Church, 1020 Balls Hill Road, McLean, Virginia.
