Dr. Michael Allen Appointed to Established Chair

Reformed Theological Seminary is pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees has appointed Dr. Michael Allen as the John Dyer Trimble Professor of Systematic Theology at RTS Orlando, a position previously held by Dr. John Frame until his retirement in May of 2017.

A native of Jackson, Mississippi, Dr. Allen grew up in Mississippi, Tennessee, Florida, and Dallas. He is an alumnus of Wheaton College, where he earned three degrees (BA, MA, PhD). Dr. Allen joined the RTS Orlando faculty in 2015, having formerly held the D. James Kennedy Chair of Systematic Theology at Knox Theological Seminary in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He also serves as Academic Dean of the Orlando campus.

Dr. Allen has published numerous books and articles, including Justification and the Gospel: Understanding the Contexts and Controversies, Reformed Theology, The Christ’s Faith: A Dogmatic Account, and (with Dr. Scott Swain) Reformed Catholicity: The Promise of Retrieval for Theology and Biblical Interpretation, and Christian Dogmatics: Reformed Theology for the Church Catholic. With Dr. Swain, he also serves as general editor of two series: Zondervan Academic’s New Studies in Dogmatics and T & T Clark’s International Theological Commentary. Dr. Allen recently completed a substantial work on the doctrine of sanctification that is due to be published by Zondervan Academic in November of 2017.

An ordained teaching elder in the Presbyterian Church in America, Dr. Allen is an active churchman. He and his wife, Emily, have two sons, Jackson and Will.

Chancellor Duncan offered his enthusiastic affirmation and congratulations on the occasion of Dr. Allen’s appointment: “It is entirely appropriate for Dr. Michael Allen to succeed Dr. John Frame as the John Dyer Trimble Professor of Systematic Theology at RTS Orlando. Professor Allen is brilliant, prolific, and faithful. He is also humble and godly. We are blessed to have him in the RTS family. When I became Chancellor of RTS four years ago, Dr. Luder Whitlock, former and longtime President of the RTS system and founder of RTS Orlando, urged me to try to get Dr. Allen on our team. He commended Mike to me as an outstanding young Reformed theologian. I’m so glad that Mike has chosen to serve the Lord with us here, and I look forward to many fruitful years of service together. I offer sincere congratulations to Mike upon this occasion of his inaugural lecture.”

Dr. Allen will deliver his inaugural lecture as John Dyer Trimble Professor of Systematic Theology on September 6, 2017 at 10:00 am in the Pamplin Chapel of RTS Orlando. The lecture is free and open to the public. For more details, see here.
