(Charlotte, NC) – August 26, 2013 – Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS) announces the inauguration of Dr. Michael J. Kruger as the fourth president of the Charlotte campus of RTS. The ceremony will be held on October 20, 2013 and will begin at 5:00 p.m. at Uptown Church, 926 Elizabeth Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28204. A reception will follow.
Dr. Kruger received a B.S. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.Div. from Westminster Theological Seminary in California, and a Ph.D. from The University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He is the author of The Gospel of the Savior (E.J. Brill, 2005), Canon Revisited (Crossway, 2012) and The Question of Canon: Challenging Perspectives on the Origin of the New Testament (IVP Academic, forthcoming). He is also the co-author of Gospel Fragments (Oxford University Press, 2009) and The Heresy of Orthodoxy: How Contemporary Culture’s Fascination with Diversity has Reshaped Our Understanding of Early Christianity (Crossway, 2010).
Prior to his appointment as president, Dr. Kruger served at RTS Charlotte as professor of New Testament for 12 years and as academic dean for 7 years. He is ordained in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) and is a member of Central Carolina Presbytery. In addition to his faculty duties, Dr. Kruger serves part time as the pastor of teaching at Uptown Christ Covenant Church in downtown Charlotte. He is married to Melissa and has three children, Emma (12), John (9), and Kate (6).
Mr. Richard Ridgway, chairman of RTS Board of Trustees, responded to the appointment of Dr. Kruger by saying, “Dr. Kruger is a man of unusual gifts. In addition to being a New Testament scholar with few equals, he is a pastor who truly loves people and is committed to the nurture of the next generation of pastoral leaders. We are confident from his own example, that Dr. Kruger will encourage the faculty to continue their nurture of students to become pastors who are able to divide the word of truth as well prepared scholars, yet able to win people to Christ and build strong and growing churches. We are grateful to Dr. Kruger for his years of faithful service on the RTS faculty and now we wish him God’s good grace as he answers the call to the responsibility of president of the RTS Charlotte Campus.”
Dr. Ligon Duncan, new RTS chancellor and senior minister of First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, Miss., will offer the message at the inauguration. Dr. Derek Thomas will present the charge to the president and Dr. John Oliver will present the charge to the campus.
