The Rev. Mark Lowrey (MCE ’71, MDiv ’77) was born on September 27, 1945 and passed away peacefully at his home on December 24, 2023. An early Reformed Theological Seminary alumnus, Lowrey was the founder of Reformed University Fellowship and the former head of Great Commission Publications.
Lowrey was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He earned a B.S. in business and marketing at the University of Southern Mississippi and served one tour with the U.S. Army in Vietnam before enrolling at RTS Jackson. Before his graduation and ordination, however, the PCA churches in Hattiesburg called him to lead a brand-new campus ministry at his alma mater.
RUF eventually spread to several university campuses and held its first staff training event at RTS Jackson in 1981. Now at 50 years old, the ministry has a presence at over 160 colleges and universities across the United States.
After 25 years with RUF, Lowrey took a position with Great Commission Publications. As the shared publishing arm of the PCA and OPC denominations, GCP is responsible for developing Sunday school curriculum, hymnals, and more. He served in several roles with GCP, including as interim executive director and associate executive director, until his death.
Lowrey is survived by his wife Priscilla and their two children, Leonard and Elizabeth. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service was held on January 6 at 2 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Another memorial service will be held on January 13 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
