The Pastor’s position is integral to our congregation and community. The position encompasses responsibilities in preaching, teaching, pastoral care, and staff and organizational oversight. The Lead Pastor is encouraged to exemplify continuous personal spiritual growth while actively engaging with the community. Biblical Qualifications for a Pastor:

Character:

  • Above reproach (blameless, good reputation)

  • Faithful to their spouse (husband of one wife — commitment to marital fidelity)

  • Temperate (self-controlled, sober-minded)

  • Self-controlled (disciplined in behavior)

  • Respectable (orderly, decent, dignified)

  • Hospitable (welcoming to others, especially strangers)

  • Able to teach (sound understanding of Scripture and ability to teach it)

  • Not given to drunkenness (not a drunkard)

  • Not violent but gentle (not quarrelsome or abusive)

  • Not quarrelsome (peaceable)

  • Not a lover of money (free from the love of wealth)

  • Manages his own family well (children obey him with proper respect)

  • Not a recent convert (spiritually mature)

  • Good reputation with outsiders (respected by non-Christians)

  • Loves what is good

  • Upright, holy, and disciplined

  • Holds firmly to the trustworthy message as taught (sound doctrine)

Spiritual Duties:

  • Shepherd the flock (lead, feed, and care for the church)

  • Watch over the church willingly and eagerly, not out of obligation

  • Be an example to the flock

  • Correct and refute those who oppose sound teaching (Titus 1:9)

Practical Considerations (not always listed but often important):

  • Call of God: A deep, personal sense that God has called them to the ministry.

  • Doctrinal Soundness: Agreement with the essential teachings of Scripture and the church’s statement of faith.

  • Pastoral Skills: Ability to preach, counsel, disciple, lead, and manage church matters.

  • Emotional Maturity: Ability to handle conflict, criticism, and crises in a godly manner.
