Dialectic School Math Teacher for the 2025 – 2026 School Year: The Geneva School
Job Description:
Hired by and subject to the supervision of the Director of the Dialectic School, the Dialectic School Math Teacher is a full-time exempt position. The teacher, in a formational and relational role, models Christ-like behavior within The Geneva School community as he or she studies, re-imagines, and teaches within the Christian, liberal arts tradition.
I. Essential Duties
Specific Job Responsibilities
- The opening is for a pre-algebra teacher for seventh grade students. Since pre-algebra is the transitional course between lower school and upper school as well as the cornerstone of advanced mathematics in high school, it requires a teacher who can review and reinforce mastery of arithmetic and basic mathematical reasoning while also introducing the fundamentals of geometric and algebraic reasoning, which are essential to equations learned in Geometry and provide the basis for a more comprehensive study in Algebra I.
- Geneva’s pre-algebra course is structured to be very student-focused, challenging students to think collaboratively and independently as they discover and investigate different mathematical rules and concepts as well as explain their reasoning or rationale for each answer.
- Students are taught a variety of problem-solving methods and are expected to apply knowledge from their previous coursework to tackle some of the more elaborate problems.
- Students also have the opportunity to revisit skills from lower school mathematics while incorporating new aspects of algebraic thinking.
- By the end of the course, the aim is that each student finds a new confidence in their abilities, works independently and interdependently to explore and reason mathematically, and sees the overall beauty of mathematics.

- Excellent communication skills: Ability to articulate complex ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing.
- Teaching experience: Proven ability to effectively engage students in active learning as they deliver instruction.
- Classroom management: Establish a positive and supportive learning environment that encourages questions, discussions, and student work in small groups. Utilize effective classroom management strategies to maintain student focus and accountability.
- Professional development: Collaborate with colleagues to share best practices and enhance curriculum.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Hold at least a bachelor’s degree, preferably in mathematics or mathematics education.
- Have experience teaching mathematics to 7-10th grade students including students who struggle with mathematics.
- Be eager to collaborate with fellow faculty on curriculum.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate well with parents.
- Display a love for learning and a passion to cultivate that love in their students.
- Agree with the school’s statement of faith, attend and be in good standing with a Christian church, and live a life of discipleship under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
The Ideal Candidate Will:
- Have 3+ years of experience teaching mathematics to 7th-12th grade students, including working with students who struggle with mathematics.
- Have experience teaching mathematics by balancing a guided-discovery approach with direct instruction..
- Have an advanced degree in mathematics or mathematics education.
- Understand that mathematics is a vital part of a classical liberal arts education.
