Children’s Ministry Director: Wallace Presbyterian Church
Job Description:
The Children’s Ministry Director position oversees ministry to children from birth through sixth grade. Under the oversight of the session and in partnership with the pastor, the director will recruit and train all staff and volunteers so that a loving, healthy, and safe environment exists to promote the spiritual, developmental, and emotional growth of each child.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversight of Curriculum: Implementing meaningful and engaging curriculum with emphasis on a thoughtful scope and sequence.
- This position is responsible for overseeing a gospel centered curriculum that aligns with the vision of the ministry. The curriculum should be accessible for the volunteers. It should also be relevant and thought provoking for the kids. Curriculum will need to be approved by the session.
- Oversight of Volunteers: This includes recruiting, training, equipping and encouraging volunteers.
- Recruiting: As people are integrated into the life of the church the job requires pursuing people to assist in the ministry to utilize the gifts of the saints and decrease in volunteer burnout. This includes working with our nursery coordinator to ensure staffing for infants, toddlers, and young kids.
- Training:
- Training new volunteers. Training these individuals on the vision, roles and responsibilities for each class, teaching techniques and procedures for children’s ministry. This includes Ministry Safe training and background checks for new volunteers.
- Training current volunteers. Keeping volunteers up to speed on curriculum changes, important techniques, procedural changes being made.
- Equipping: Coordinating with volunteers each week to make sure they are equipped for the week ahead. This includes confirming their participation and providing materials for lessons if or as needed.
- Encouraging: Volunteer retention is dependent on volunteer appreciation and encouragement. This can be done a number of ways but it’s a vital aspect of this position.
- Oversight of Parental Discipleship: Our conviction is that the church walks alongside and assists parents in the discipleship of their children. Therefore, this position will require consistent contact with the parents. The following are examples of how this position thinks through this reality:
- Maintaining good, transparent communication with all the families involved in the ministry and with volunteers. This includes informing parents on curriculum and how to implement the curriculum at home.
- Seek to relate to new families and children in Christ-like ways through effective and caring follow-up.
- Oversight of the Children’s Spaces: Provide a safe and inviting space for the children to learn, grow, and play.
- Making sure that the Children’s Ministry wing and check-in station are prepared for Sunday mornings and special events when they occur. Ex. In conjunction with the Nursery Coordinator, make sure rooms are clean, toys are in good repair, snacks are prepared, etc.
- Implementing and overseeing security protocols for kids rooms
- Rooms can also be decorated for different themes that correlate to curriculum
- Participate in regular Sunday worship and monthly staff meetings.
- Oversee summer Vacation Bible School (VBS), Children’s Christmas Program, and other special events.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Spiritually mature individual possessing a vibrant and growing relationship with Jesus. This relationship will be seen by the fruit of the Spirit found in abundance in his/her life.
- Be in substantive agreement with the reformed theology of Wallace Presbyterian.
- Love for the church and raising up the next generation in the grace and love of Christ.
- Strong interpersonal skills (engaging and motivating both children, parents, and volunteers).
- Ability to teach and communicate to children on their level.
- Must love being around children.
- Ability to assist in the development of an annual budget for children’s ministries.
