Who Are The Moravians

The Moravians (Unitas Fratrum) are the oldest protestant denomination who spring from the martyrdom of the Czech reformer, Jan Hus in 1415 at Constance, Switzerland.  The Moravians predated the German reformer, Martin Luther by about 100 years.  Hus’s martyrdom spawned the Hussite Wars between the Catholics and the reformers, with a small surviving band of believers eventually migrating to Herrnhut, Germany in 1722, where they found refuge on the estate of a young German Count, Nicolas Von Zinzendorf.  In Herrnhut, the Moravians prospered, and within 12 years sent out 300 missionaries to far flung places, such as Greenland, Labrador, the West Indes, North America, etc.  Today, there are approximately 1.5 million Moravians worldwide with about 80% in Africa, 10% in Europe and North America, and most of the remainder in the West Indes and Latin America.
