DALLAS — Reformed Theological Seminary is pleased to announce that Dr. Mark McDowell has been promoted from Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology to Associate Professor of Systematic Theology. The promotion is effective June 1, 2024.
Dr. McDowell joined RTS in 2017. Besides serving as a faculty member, he is currently the Executive Director of the Dallas and Houston campuses.
“Dr. McDowell’s love for the Lord and his church is infectious,” said Dr. Robert Cara, RTS Provost and Chief Academic Officer. “This is evidenced in his writings and his classroom lectures. As to his academic emphases, I am especially impressed that he consistently ensures that systematic-theological formulations are grounded in the Scriptures.”
Ordained in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, Dr. McDowell previously served as a minister at First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina. He holds an MDiv from Reformed Theological Seminary, a ThM from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and a Ph.D. in systematic theology from King’s College at the University of Aberdeen. His doctoral work was completed under the late Dr. John B. Webster.
Dr. McDowell’s research interests include Christology, political theology, and ethics. He has contributed to a number of publications, including Covenant Theology: Biblical, Theological, and Historical Perspectives (Crossway, 2020). He is currently under contract with Baker Academic to co-edit a volume entitled Reading the Life of Christ Theologically: A Chalcedonian Commentary with Dr. Kevin Vanhoozer. Dr. McDowell and his wife, Monica, have four boys.
“Dr. McDowell has demonstrated wise and pastoral leadership in the church, on campus, and in the classroom,” said Dr. Blair Smith, Academic Dean of the Dallas and Houston campuses. “His promotion to Associate Professor is well-deserved, and I look forward to seeing how he continues to bless the church through his teaching at RTS Dallas and other campuses as well as through his theological writing.”
