Promotion of Dr. Nicholas Reid to Associate Professor

Reformed Theological Seminary is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. J. Nicholas Reid as Associate Professor of Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at RTS Orlando effective as of June 1, 2018.

Nicholas joined the faculty of RTS-Orlando in January 2017. He teaches core courses related to Old Testament and covenant theology and offers advanced electives in the languages and cultures of the ancient Near East. He also currently serves as director of the hybrid M.Div. program at RTS Orlando. “He is a brilliant but humble scholar, a sound theologian, a faithful churchman, a loving husband and father, and an outstanding teacher,” said Chancellor J. Ligon Duncan.

Nicholas received the D.Phil. in Oriental Studies with an emphasis on cuneiform at the University of Oxford, having previously received the M.Div. at RTS Jackson, the M.Th. in Hebrew Bible/Old Testament at the University of Aberdeen, and the M.St. in cuneiform studies at the University of Oxford. He has since lectured in university settings in the United Kingdom and North America. He was recently appointed Research Affiliate at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University. Reid also worked as an Associate Editor of Hebrew for BibleMesh. Previously, he was a full time Visiting Research Scholar at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, New York University, and then he taught Old Testament at Reformation Bible College in Sanford, FL.

Dr. Reid’s research interests cover a broad range of topics, including social history, the biblical text, as well as unpublished epistolary, literary, and administrative cuneiform texts. He is presently coauthoring a textual edition of a group of unpublished Old Babylonian letters for Oxford University Press. Dr. Reid also contributes to the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative (cdli.ucla.edu). Recent articles have been published in Journal of Ancient Near Eastern History, Revue d’Assyrologie, Akkadica, and Journal of Near Eastern Studies.

Dr. Scott Swain, President of RTS Orlando, commented: “Dr. Nicholas Reid has distinguished himself very quickly as a scholar of the languages and cultures of the ancient Near East. And he has made a wonderful contribution both inside and outside the classroom at RTS Orlando. It is a joy to have him as a faculty colleague. I am thrilled about his promotion to the rank of associate professor and look forward to seeing how the Lord will continue to use Dr. Reid in preparing pastors and leaders for Christ’s church.”
