JACKSON, Miss. — Reformed Theological Seminary is pleased to announce that the Rev. Dr. David Strain will deliver the 2024 John Reed Miller Preaching Lectures entitled, “Models of Ministry,” at RTS Jackson.

Dr. David Strain is the Senior Minister of the First Presbyterian Church in Jackson, MS, and Convener of the Twin Lakes Fellowship. He is the author of commentaries on Philippians, Ruth and Esther and a volume in The Blessings of the Faith series entitled Expository Preaching. A native of Glasgow, Scotland, he has pastored churches in London, England and Mississippi over the last twenty years. He and his wife, Sheena, have two sons.

David Strain is my pastor. When I moved to Jackson in 2014, I was grateful to God to sit under his preaching. His expository messages are crystal clear; his applications reach the heart. He invites men and women to receive the Savior freely offered to them in the gospel,” said Dr. Charlie Wingard, Professor of Pastoral Theology and Dean of Students.I can’t think of anyone more qualified to instruct student preachers than David – he is a splendid role model for the next generation of preachers/pastors.”

Chancellor Ligon Duncan said, “I am thrilled that we have Dr. David Strain giving the John Reed Miller Lectures at RTS Jackson this year. David is a faithful pastor, a gifted preacher, and a respected churchman. His steadiness, wisdom, insight, and instincts are a blessing to the church, his denomination, and the wider Reformed evangelical world. It is a delight to sit under his ministry, to enjoy his friendship, and to learn from his example. You will be blessed under his teaching.

The John Reed Miller Preaching Lectures

The John Reed Miller Preaching Lectures are the oldest continuous lectureship at RTS. They derive their name from Dr. John Reed Miller, the pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Jackson from 1952-1968. Dr. Miller started a winter lecture series on Reformed theology that was an early precursor to RTS.

Along with Sam Patterson, Dr. Miller was one of the five pastors who met to pray about the seminary’s founding. First Presbyterian Church later established and funded the RTS John Reed Miller Lectures in his honor to promote the biblical theology and practice of Reformed preaching and pastoral ministry that Dr. Miller embodied in his life and work.

Past speakers for the lectures have included Rico Tice, Ralph Davis, Mark Dever, Julius Kim, Sinclair Ferguson, Tim Keller, Kevin DeYoung, Brian Habig, Jason Helopoulos, and an array of other esteemed speakers. Recordings of the prior lectures are available on the RTS website.
