We remember Dr. John W.P. Oliver, former Professor of Homiletics and Practical Theology Emeritus, as he reflects on the importance of nurturing our calling to ministry through a faithful devotional life. He encourages those serving the church to guard their personal walk with the Lord, allowing him to shape their hearts as they prepare to minister his Word to others.

The following is a transcript of the video above.

For Brandon Cobb (MABS 2024, RTS New York City), the first months of planting Eden Church NJ have brought something he didn’t expect so soon: a steady stream of new believers professing faith and stepping into the waters of baptism. “We are grateful for all of the souls and stories God is redeeming,” Cobb says. “It is a privilege to have a front-row seat to the power of Jesus at work.”

Psalm 16 is a beautiful Davidic Psalm full of memorable lines that express trust in the Lord (“in you I take refuge,” v. 1), confidence in his care (“I have no good apart from you,” v. 2), and contentment with his provision (“the lines have fallen for me in pleasant places,” v. 6). Because of God’s character, David can’t imagine following the ways of the idolatrous (v. 4), but sets the Lord always before him (v. 8). But he saves
perhaps his most evocative lyric for last—“in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

Dr. James Anderson explains how the transcendental argument maintains that even those who doubt God’s existence must presuppose him to reason and express that doubt. He explores why the laws of reason require a personal, transcendent source and how human rationality depends upon the divine mind as the foundation of all rationality and truth.

The following is a transcript of the video above.

Systematic theology helps us engage with the whole of Scripture, challenges our blind spots, and shapes our understanding of God according to his word. It also helps us persevere through suffering and difficult questions, connects us with the historic church, and prepares us to respond faithfully to objections raised against the Christian faith.
