Description of Organization

In 1996, City of Refuge Church was born out of a vision for reaching out to the “least of these,” and as a community has welcomed and encouraged a membership of believers from all walks of life.  Over the years, the church has housed several charter schools for low-income students, as well as partnering to start a community development ministry that became known as “The Forge for Families.”

Our location enables us to bridge the great divide between two modern worlds. On one side, the Third Ward is home to some of the most important institutions in Houston’s African-American community, and on the other side is the world-renowned Texas Medical Center. Also nearby are Rice University, the University of Houston, and Texas Southern University. While there has been much new housing and business development in the area, a thriving medical center and a growing student population, there are still many families struggling economically, socially, and spiritually.

As a testimony to God’s faithfulness, City of Refuge in 2020 is still a diverse community of about 150 believers who are grounded in strong Biblical teaching, genuine fellowship, and growing in the discipline of prayer. A high proportion of our members are serving in church ministry and active in their community groups. We are a relatively young congregation with a clear and widely shared culture of compassion and diversity. While our previous community ministries are now operating separately from the church, many individuals in our congregation are serving the local community and desire to reflect the social, racial, and economic composition of our surrounding area.
