While this document describes a “ministry position” within Parkview Church, it is recognized that any leadership role within the church is a calling from Christ, not simply a job. Thus, our desire, here at Parkview, is that each role would be fulfilled to the glory of His name; that we would not merely set up a well-constructed ministry position but would rely on the Spirit to build and edify His church.

The intention behind this position comes from 2 Timothy 2:2. That we, the leaders at Parkview Church, would entrust the gospel to faithful men, so they would be able to teach others also. Below are the roles and responsibilities of the Pastoral Intern position.


Principal Functions: 50%

The Pastoral Intern will primarily reside over Parkview’s student ministry programs. He will be responsible for directing and maintaining a Gospel-centered ministry that coincides with Scripture, the ideals of the church, and the leadership of its elders. This candidate must be passionate about discipleship and excited by outward facing ministry. Building relationships with the children and youth and helping them grow deeper in their faith, this person will work alongside of the Lead Pastor in serving the next generation of our church family.

As well as serving the student ministries, this person will communicate with Parkview’s congregation and serve as the first point of contact with visiting families. As such, this person needs the ability to represent Parkview and its ministries well. The intern must be someone who is able to carry out their assigned tasks in a manner that is consistent with the vision and mission of the church and in the spirit of the Gospel. In addition to a variety of typical administrative and ministry support tasks, this position requires the ability to adapt to miscellaneous errands to assist Parkview where help is needed. The intern will also deal with sensitive information regarding shepherding, budgets, and other church business, and must be able to utilize discretion and maintain confidentiality.

Youth Ministry Responsibilities:

  • Teach and oversee Bible instruction in all areas of the youth ministry.
  • Ensure fruitful and intentional relational discipleship with a select few students.
  • Recruit, train, and shepherd volunteer youth staff with diverse gifts and personalities.
  • Communicate well with students and parents, keeping them informed of ongoing activities.
  • Keep parents updated on ministry strategies and plans in a way that encourages partnership and involvement.
  • Support and encourage parents in effectively fulfilling their Christian parenting roles.
  • Assist in the development and oversight of the youth ministry budgets and expenses with the session of elders.
  • Seek to integrate student ministry into other phases of church life to create an intergenerational culture and complement other church ministries.
  • Lead Sunday morning youth small group.

Children’s Ministry responsibilities:

  • Create/select and organize curriculum with children’s ministry leadership team.
  • Lead and oversee volunteers to teach and serve in Sunday morning activities.
  • Fill absentee volunteer positions through recruitment, background checks, assigning roles, and training.
  • Support and equip volunteers by providing encouragement, feedback, and demonstrations of appreciation.
  • Plan, communicate, train, and vision cast the future of the ministry with children’s leadership team.
  • Continually assess needs and flow of all points of children’s ministry and make adjustments, where appropriate, to best serve congregation.
  • Ensure a safe, warm, and welcoming environment for visiting and existing families and their children.
  • Build relationships with parents/families.
  • Maintain current records for volunteer contact information, applications, and background checks.
  • Purchase and prepare supplies for ministry events.
  • Create and maintain a Children’s Ministries Manual with policies and procedures; update as needed.
  • Purchase any ministry and office supplies as needed.
  • Manage budget and recording expenditures.

General Responsibilities:

  • Attend weekly staff meetings.
  • Maintain regular office hours at Parkview’s office to be available for the benefit of both Parkview’s parents and its community.
  • Manage/organize events and activities on church calendar.
  • Manage e-mails
  • Post updates and photos on social media on a regular basis.
  • Work closely with the Office Manager and the teachers of Parkview Christian School.
  • Maintain constant contact with our Lead Pastor and other ministry leaders.

 Organizational Ministry Training & Development:  15%

As the Pastoral Intern ministers and learns within the church, he will be responsible for coordinating the ongoing details between our ministries. This will primarily happen by working with our ministry team leaders and communicating with our church through different platforms. The intern will also attend weekly staff meetings to work alongside of other administrative positions in and outside of our organization. This person will need to feel comfortable recruiting and coordinating volunteers, creating and working with teams, planning and coordinating events, and being able to adjust to the various demands and imperfections of ministry on the fly.

Teaching, Preaching, and Leading Worship Focus:  10%

An important part of growing in pastoral ministry is the accurate handling of the Scriptures. Those called to such ministry must be able to “rightly handle the Word of Truth” (2 Tim 2:15).  This means opportunities will be given to the Pastoral Intern to assist in preaching, lead a men’s Bible study or community group, and, helping lead worship within the church, under the oversight of the session and the Pastor.

Pastoral Shepherding Focus:  10%

It will also be important for the Pastoral Intern to grow in a shepherding role within the church, both to comfort and correct the flock for their growth and service to each other and to Christ. This means getting to know the church family with a focus on every age group, ministering to them in various ways (e.g. visitation, community groups, 1-1 meetings, individual or group discipleship, visiting the sick and infirmed, other) and in particular, praying for the flock. As the Pastoral Intern begins this process, he will assist and accompany Pastor James in his duties and be mentored in this role throughout his employment.

Outreach Focus:  10%

At Parkview, evangelism and outreach are huge. They affect almost everything we do. Both in and outside of worship, we intentionally seek to engage non-believers so that we might love and share the gospel with the intention of winning people to Christ (Acts 17:4).  The Pastoral Intern’s responsibility is to first model this in his own life. Also, his role in this position will be to equip the saints at Parkview to better share their faith and make new disciples through example, teaching, and creative relational strategies. Every area of ministry that he is responsible for will be affected by this. The Pastoral Intern will seek to understand the current outreach efforts within the church and recommend to the session his own ideas about how we can further impact Lilburn and the surrounding communities with the Gospel.

 Studies: 5%

As our goal is to raise a man up for ministry, part of his responsibility will be to academic study. The intern will be required to be pursuing a theological degree from an accredited, reformed denomination, preferably, but not limited to Covenant Seminary, RTS, or Westminster. The intern will be paid for 5 hours a week in study, and Parkview will support his calling by paying for one seminary class per semester.

Personal Life:

Character & Example

The pastoral intern is to set an example in his character, the same as the rest of the church leadership. While he is growing in learning how to lead in the Lord’s church and among His people, he is also one who realizes his own need of grace (2 Cor 12:9) and humbly and prayerfully looks to the Scriptures for the Lord’s leading (Prov 3:5-6, Ps 25:4), strength, direction, correction, and growth in Christ.

In order to minister to others and especially in order to learn to more accurately handle the Scriptures in preaching and teaching, he needs to drink often from the same living water he extends to others (John 4:14, Rev 21:6).  He must be a man striving to live a life of prayer (Rom 1:9, 2 Tim 1:3).

The Pastoral Intern is an example to the church as are other leaders (1 Peter 5:1-3). He must execute his calling without compulsion, maintain a credible witness inside and outside the church, adorn the gospel with a life of devotion to Christ, and demonstrate God’s love and grace to His people.  While never doing this perfectly, he will persevere in reliance upon the grace of God in Christ and for His glory.

Oversight & Mentoring

Oversight of the Pastoral Intern is the responsibility of the Session. Pastor James Martin (teaching elder and Lead Pastor) will be the primary mentor of this man. James will disciple and instruct the Pastoral Intern with regard to his roles as defined in this document and will provide clear goals and training guidance throughout the year.


The Pastoral Intern is responsible to learn about and assist in shepherding the congregation of Parkview Church in the areas of outreach, teaching and preaching, and assisting in worship in collaboration with the elders.  He is to serve as an example to the congregation in these areas and will receive training as well as have opportunities for personal development with the goal of ordination within the Presbyterian Church of America (PCA).  (See link below for full job description.)
