Job Title:

Pastor for Youth and Families

Job Description:

Part-time Pastor for Youth and Families (PYF)

Vision Statement for EBC’s Youth Ministry:

The Elder’s vision for the youth ministry of Emmanuel Baptist Church is to see our young people developed into mature disciples of Jesus. We believe the best means to this end are Bible instruction, strengthened family life, participation in the wider life of the church, and opportunities to build camaraderie with other Christian young people. These means serve as the core values of our youth ministry.

Bible Instruction

We believe that Bible instruction is key to growth in Christlikeness. We become partakers of the divine nature and escape the world’s corruption through God’s precious and very great promises (2 Peter 1:4). Our faith comes by hearing the word of Christ (Rom 10:17). God’s Word gives believers the instruction necessary for “love that issues from a pure heart and good conscience and a sincere faith” (1 Tim 1:5). Therefore, at the heart of our Youth and Family Ministry will be instruction in God’s Word.

Strengthening Families

We also believe that God has ordained the family to be the primary context for biblical instruction and discipleship (Deut 6:7,8). Ephesians 6:4 tells us that it is the role of fathers to raise their children up “in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” Therefore, at the heart of any biblical youth ministry should be the strengthening of family life and instruction concerning a child’s place in it. After all, it would seem that the closest thing to a “youth pastor” in the Bible is a parent (Prov 1:8).

This core value has surely been undermined by the breakdown of the family in our society. Many children come from broken or non-Christian homes that do not grant them the privilege of a godly family life. We do not respond to this challenge by abandoning the family-centered nature of child discipleship. Rather, we seek to spiritually “adopt” these children and, to the best of our ability, provide them with the family atmosphere they lack.

Participation in Church Life

Furthermore, we believe that the church-at-large, not merely the youth group, is the ideal place for a young person to exercise his or her spiritual gifts. Too many youth programs are churning out graduates who show little appreciation for the local church. This is a shame because the local church is essential to a life of growth in Christ (Heb 3:12-14). Therefore, serving the church, spending time with other age groups in the church, and ministering arm-in-arm with other church members will be one of the driving forces in our calendar planning. We believe the best youth group is not the biggest in town, but the one that is preparing youth for a lifetime of service to Christ in the context of the local church.

Building Camaraderie

Finally, we believe in the importance of friendship in the discipleship process. “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm” (Prov 13:20). The Bible has a great deal to say about walking with the wise. Therefore, we desire to foster godly friendships among the youth of our church. To this end, we will seek to provide the youth with opportunities to engage in fun fellowship with other young people.

Having these values does not guarantee “success” or the salvation of any person. God alone saves, and he alone gives fruit. We do believe, though, that pursuing these values is biblical and, therefore, best. We will pursue them, then, in dependence upon God’s mercy and grace
