Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities


  • Biblical teaching and preaching in a clear, relevant, and engaging manner
  • Shepherding of the congregation
  • Casting vision for the direction of the church in gracious collaboration with the other Elders
  • Spiritual leader of the church along with the other Elders
  • Development, training, and mentoring of lay-leaders in the church, including Elders, Deacons, teachers, etc.
  • Lead, oversee, and evaluate the structure of the worship services
  • Develop, maintain, create, and adjust ministries as needed in the church to better grow discipleship and the effectiveness of the church
  • Along with the Elders, provide loving oversight to the church and its committees
  • Maintain regular office hours to be available for prayer and counsel
  • Create environments that foster meaningful, biblical community
  • Connect with the local community
  • Fulfills all the Elder responsibilities as outlined in our church Constitution and Bylaws (
  • Engage in loving conflict resolution and gracious church discipline as needs arise
  • Perform the usual pastoral duties of visitations, counseling, and the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper
  • Officiating funerals and weddings per personal discretion
  • Engage in strategic planning and team building
  • Envision and communicate the need for ministry teams, then develop structure, recruit, disciple, and empower ministry leaders and team members
  • Lead, oversee, and develop the church staff and create a healthy church culture
  • Communicate clearly and consistently with church staff, leaders, and the congregation
  • Lead the church in unity, mission-mindedness and a heart for the hurting
  • Lead the church in evangelism, The Great Commission, and community outreach alongside the other Elders



Compensation and Benefits


  • Full-time position with salary commensurate with education and experience
  • Three weeks paid vacation

Position Qualifications:

Character and Heart


  • A man who is biblically qualified according to the Elder qualifications listed in 1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9, 2:1; 1 Peter 5:1-4.
  • He displays an intimate relationship with Jesus as well as the fruit of the Spirit, and an ongoing personal spiritual growth in his life
  • Shows evidence of personal worship, evangelism, and discipleship
  • Has a teachable spirit and is able to receive constructive criticism and apply it for personal development
  • He exhibits love and a relational spirit with people
  • He devotes significant personal time to prayer and Bible study
  • Exhibits and is committed to servant-leadership as the model for a pastor
  • Exhibits a life of integrity and moral purity
  • If married with children, he shows loving leadership to his wife and children
  • Shows the compassionate sensitivity of a gentle shepherd
  • Displays authenticity, openness, approachability, and an utter dependence on God


   Doctrine, Church Philosophy, & Culture


  • Must be in full agreement with our church’s Statement of Beliefs, Constitution and Bylaws, positions, and values (
  • Commitment to the inerrancy, infallibility, and authority of Scripture
  • Commitment to the plurality of Elders as the biblical model for church government
  • Is gospel-centered and theologically conservative, communicating the gospel of salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone
  • Committed to believer’s baptism
  • Feels a definite burning call to pastoral ministry and the local church


   Academic Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required
  • Master’s degree in related field is preferred (MDiv, Theology, Pastoral Ministry, etc.)


   Experience Requirements


  • At least three years or more of proven leadership experience in a similar church function is strongly preferred




  • Displays the giftings of leadership and teaching
  • Eager and able to build effective relationships with people of varying ages, demographics and walks of life
  • Shows discernment and good judgment
  • Able to envision and communicate the need for ministry teams, develop structure, recruit, disciple, and empower ministry leaders and team members

First Baptist Church Holton is a church averaging about 150 regular attendees that offers two services to the community: Traditional and Contemporary. The town of Holton, Kansas is home to about 3,300 people, which expands to about 5,000 when including the surrounding communities that pour into the town on a regular basis. Holton has a local hospital, a brand new Wal-Mart, a local grocers and various fast food restaurant options. The town also has a new elementary school and a very strong sense of community with a “small town” feel, even though it has great access to comfortable amenities.
