About the Office of Business and Financial Services: The Office of Business and Financial Services (OBFS) supports the business and financial operations of Reformed Theological Seminary and assists all RTS divisions across the RTS system in daily operations. OBFS serves as the lead office for all centralized shared business/financial services. As the lead office for planning, budget and financial administration of the RTS enterprise, the mission of OBFS is to support research, instruction, and all academic services by providing prompt, reliable business and financial information and services while balancing compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies.

About the Chief Financial Officer: The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible and accountable for the financial and administrative operations of Reformed Theological Seminary, including business operations, organizational sustainability, and liquidity management to allow RTS to achieve its mission. The CFO works directly with the RTS Chancellor and all campus Presidents/Executive Directors. Reporting to the Chancellor on finance, accounting, and operations and reporting through the Chief of Staff to the Chancellor on all human resource issues, the CFO fosters an environment of optimal transparency among the RTS Board, senior leadership, and administrative staff. The CFO serves as an ex-officio member of the Chancellor’s Council and serves on the Chancellor’s Cabinet.

Finance/Accounting – 50%

  • Provide staff support to committees of the RTS Board, including the Finance, Investment and Executive Committees and is responsible for providing RTS Board members with timely and accurate information for decision-making;
  • Oversee all functions of budgeting and accounting, information technology, and operations/administration for all organizational functions, including human resource management;
  • Drive the creation of timely and accurate reports and analyses to keep RTS staff and Board members apprised and engaged in ensuring RTS’ optimal financial operating position and long-term sustainability;
  • Forecast and monitor performance against budget, and recommend adjustments and corrections as needed;
  • Serve as liaison with banks and providers of contracted services including accountants and auditors, investment advisors, and legal counsel.

Operations – 25%

  • Encourage entrepreneurial thinking, interdepartmental collaboration, creative problem-solving, and development of new business models that advance the mission of RTS and its academic programs;
  • Working with the Chancellor, Chief of Staff and Chief Development Officer, pursue new strategic partnerships, collaborative ventures, and other avenues that provide sustainable growth and broaden and diversify RTS’ student body, donor base, and revenue streams from all sources including digital assets;
  • Establish the use of leading financial technology tools that will increase the effectiveness and efficiency for the entire RTS enterprise;
  • Serve as a thought partner to the Chancellor and Chief of Staff to turn ideas into operating plans;
  • Working with the Chief of Staff, provide guidance and support to the RTS staff and divisions as they execute plans and ensure that performance metrics, systems, and procedures are in place to evaluate results on an ongoing basis.

Human Resources – 25%

  • Provide direction in the implementation of best practices in human resource management, including: compliance through employment policies, background checks, compensation and benefits, and equitable growth opportunities for staff;
  • Manage relationships with brokers, third-party administrators, and carriers to ensure RTS is receiving competitive rates and quality service for RTS benefit programs;
  • Develop and implement employee relations initiatives and retention strategies.

Position Qualifications:

Education/Experience Requirements

A strong background in finance and administration with a degree in finance, accounting or business management is required. MBA or JD preferred. CPA preferred. A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience is required. The CFO will have a track record of helping to shape and execute institutional strategic/operating plans and will have excellent skills in budgeting, forecasting, and setting revenue and expense targets for multiple programs in multiple venues, and the ability to communicate information effectively both in verbal and written form. The CFO will have a thorough working knowledge of, and experience utilizing, the technology available to support finance and operations. The successful candidate will be familiar with best practices in human resource management.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements

Must be a faithful Christian committed to Reformed theology and the Westminster Standards. Must be a leader with a management style that encourages creativity, transparency, risk-taking, teamwork, and the open exchange of ideas. Must have excellent supervisory skills and a track record for mentoring and developing staff. The CFO will be able to manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities. The CFO will be curious, nimble, and imaginative.
