Associate Pastor (Counseling and Pastoral Care)

Job Description:

The Associate Pastor is a part of a ministry team at Harvest OPC with a particular focus on counseling ministry. Overseen by the Session, the Associate Pastor is responsible for leading and developing the counseling ministry at Harvest, providing direct counseling to individuals, and being the primary visiting pastor.


Pastoral Care & Counseling

  • Lead and develop the Love & Truth counseling ministry. This includes developing and training volunteer counselors.
  • Provide pre-marital, marriage, individual, and family counseling
  • Participate in monthly pastor-elder meetings
  • Visit members for pastoral care (i.e. shepherding visits, hospital visits, elderly visits)

Preaching & Teaching

  • Teach Harvest members about relevant topics in counseling and Christian living
  • Train volunteer counselors on relevant counseling tools, techniques, and concepts
  • Preach occasionally at Harvest
  • Lead worship services occasionally
  • Take opportunities to preach at other venues (i.e. Harvest church plants, local pulpit supply, and school chapels)

Leadership & Administration

  • Develop Love & Truth counseling program so that it meets the needs of members and beyond
  • Work with Love & Truth counseling committee to launch and maintain support groups
  • Promote the counseling ministry within and without of Harvest
  • Establish partnerships with outside service providers in the area
  • Attend Session Meetings
  • Attend Weekly Staff Meeting
  • Attend regular church committee meetings


  • Person will be overseen by the Harvest Church Session
  • Person will work closely with the Pastoral Staff, elders, deacons, and other volunteers

Salary and Benefits

This is a salaried position. Compensation and benefits will be commensurate with the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Skills and Competencies

  • Committed to the mission and vision of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church and Harvest Church
  • Have experience and giftedness in counseling
  • Have gifts in discipleship and training
  • Ability to teach
  • Demonstrate a proficiency in written communication
  • Discipline and flexibility to prioritize and execute vital ministries
  • Ability to enlist, coordinate, and lead volunteer efforts to accomplish large and small projects well
  • Exhibit an eagerness to and a pattern of sharing the gospel with unbelieving persons
  • Must be comfortable working as part of a team
  • Skills in handling interpersonal conflicts according to biblical principles
  • Able to take direction and receive feedback


  • Master of Divinity degree or equivalent preferred
  • Licensed in the State of Michigan to counsel or have the ability to acquire a license
  • Training or education in counseling
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Must be licensed or ordained in a NAPARC church or willing to be ordained in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church
