Assistant Pastor

Job Description:

Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, a congregation in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, seeks to hire an Assistant Pastor to help the Pastor and the session fulfill the mission of the church.  The Assistant Pastor will provide leadership and will discharge the duties of a pastor for the gathering, building up, equipping and sending of the church.  The primary area of focus will be the home fellowship group system and helping people connect outside of Sunday worship.  He will need to demonstrate Christian character and maturity (1 Tim 3:1-7, Titus 1:6-9), take initiative and responsibility, and work with leaders, groups and individuals.  The Assistant Pastor must be someone who thrives in an urban environment, values the diversity of New York City, and can effectively minister in a university neighborhood.

Pastoral work

Perform the duties of a Teaching Elder

  • Sunday Worship: preaching (approximately 12 times a year), officiating the Lord’s Supper at most services, leading in prayer and other elements of the worship service
  • Teaching: assist with education in the church classes, seminars, leadership training, and other means of teaching (writing curriculum, on-line resources, etc.) as needed
  • Prayer: for the church and her members privately, with the staff and elders, and publicly at our gatherings
  • baptisms, weddings, special services
  • leadership and coordination of occasional special events (seminars, prayer gatherings, retreats, etc.)
  • attend monthly session meetings and assist the session in their work
  • serve in some capacity outside the church for greater missional impact (in the Presbytery, neighborhood, partnering with other organizations, etc.)
  • meet with individuals for prayer, counsel, shepherding
  • personal development (reading, conferences, and making use of means to grow spiritually and professionally)

 

Oversight of the fellowship and life group systems

The goal is to bring people together so that spiritual friendships are formed and deepened, where the church is intentional and regular with Bible study, prayer, accountability and support, and where life is shared and people are encouraged for mission

  • Identify, train and support leaders of fellowship groups (small groups of 4-15 people)
  • help new groups form, and help groups deepen and multiply
  • facilitate the connection of individuals with groups
  • oversee special groups as needed (women/men, internationals, seeker/evangelistic, etc.)
  • create and implement a plan to form and assist life groups (groups of 3-4 people who are in contact less formally than fellowship groups but more frequently and with greater depth)
  • give special attention to the social dynamics of the church and how to improve assimilation and connection

Discipleship and Evangelism

Help people connect with Jesus, and grow and mature in their faith

  • work with the Pastor to develop a discipleship plan that helps individuals in different stages of Christian development, and implement and coordinate components of that plan as negotiated with the Pastor
  • provide leadership to facilitate, train and create opportunities for members to participate in the work of outreach and evangelism
  • create and implement a strategy to help people discover and use their gifts in the context of the church and world

Administrative and Leadership

Oversight of projects and groups within the organizational structures and systems of the church

  • Oversight of operations staff and volunteers for Sunday and special events
  • Overseeing ministries of the church as directed by the Senior Pastor, which may include hiring and supervising staff or coordination of volunteers for areas that could include children’s ministry, praise band, the Mercy Team (diaconate), or social media
  • working with staff and leaders to help fulfill the goals of the church (including attendance at staff meetings)
  • leadership for occasional projects

Position Qualifications:

 

  • Ordination in the PCA or meeting the qualifications for ordination and seeking ordination in the PCA
  • Ministry experience in an urban environment
  • Experience leading Bible studies and community groups
  • Must have strong relational, communication and administrative abilities
  • Collaborative/team player
  • Ability to gather and lead teams for projects
  • Flexibility and willing to work with the dynamics of a smaller church with high turnover
