DESCRIPTION:Schedule\nLecture 1 (11:00am-12:00pm) ​”Jesus’ Death and Resurrection in Canonical and Apocryphal Gospels”\nLunch (12:00pm-1:00pm) ​On campus and included in the registration fee\nLecture 2 (1:00pm-2:00pm) ​”Jesus the Jewish Messiah in Canonical and Apocryphal Gospels” \nRegistration is now open here.  \n​​​​Speaker\nDr. Simon Gathercole\, Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity will deliver the ​annual lecture series. \nDr. Gathercole’s first degree was in Classics and Theology in Cambridge\, after which he ​pursued doctoral research under the supervision of James D.G. Dunn in Durham. Having ​begun as a classicist\, and also having worked in the field of early Judaism\, Dr. Gathercole is particularly fascinated by the connections between the New Testament and the literature ​contemporaneous with it. His principal theological interests are Christology and the doctrine of the atonement. \nSome of Dr. Gathercole’s most recent publications include Defending Substitution: An Essay on Atonement in Paul (Baker Academic\, 2015)\, and The Gospel of Thomas: Introduction and Commentary (Brill\, 2014). He is currently writing a book on the way in which canonical and apocryphal Gospels treat the early Christian kerygma. \nAbout the Harold O. J. Brown Lecture Series \nDr. Harold O.J. Brown served as John R. Richardson Professor of Theology and Philosophy at the Charlotte campus of Reformed Theological Seminary from 1998 to 2007. Dr. Brown was a leading evangelical voice in the pro-life movement immediately after Roe v. Wade\, co-founding the Christian Action Council (now Care Net) with former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop. Dr. Brown was a distinguished evangelical scholar during his professional life\, writing books\, essays and articles in the areas of culture\, science\, theology and politics. His books include: The Protest of a Troubled Protestant (1969)\, Christianity and the Class Struggle (1970)\, Death Before Birth(1977)\, The Reconstruction of the Republic (1977)\, Heresies: The Image of Christ in the Mirror of Heresy and Orthodoxy from the Apostles to the Present (1984)\, and Sensate Culture (1996). Dr. Brown was much beloved by his colleagues and students at RTS who honor the memory of their dear friend with an annual lecture series at RTS Charlotte. \n
