RTS Jackson began our Fall Semester with Orientation on Tuesday, August 23, Convocation on Wednesday, August 24, and our annual school year kickoff social on Friday, August 26.
At Orientation we welcomed a wide variety of new students into our community. We had a Medical Doctor, a PhD, a lawyer, a nuclear physicist, an architect, several teachers, a couple of pastors, and a principle of a KIPP Charter School. Our students came from AL, AR, CA, GA, IL, ID, KS, LA, MA, MN, MO, MS, MI, NC, NH, NY, PA, SC, TX, VT, VA, and internationally from Kenya, Malawi, Canada, and China. We had a semi-pro soccer player and several college athletes: track & field, two basketball players, and a soccer player. One of our students was the President of the Student Body at MSU, one had twins four months ago, and one plays the bagpipes. What a diverse group of new students!
Convocation was held on the first day of classes, Wednesday, August 23. The faculty marched in their academic attire, and Dr. Dan Timmer gave the Convocation Address entitled “What Does Uz Have to Do with Jerusalem?” A free lunch followed at Patterson’s Porch with our traditional Grilled Chicken Salad. The whole community participated.
On Friday, August 26, our Student Cabinet hosted our first (of many) social event of the year, a BBQ at the Townhomes. More than 200 students, faculty, and staff and their families came to an evening of food, fellowship, and fun. For the kids the BBQ was highlighted by two large bounce-house/water-slides, and a snow cone machine. For the adults, in addition to developing friendships, our Student Body President, Branden Henry, acquired over $700 of free stuff from local vendors to give away as door prizes. The student who drove from the furthest away to come to seminary (Seattle, WA) received an oil change, the family with the most children (7) got three Caesar’s pizzas, and those with the youngest and oldest first child (several weeks & 16) received a manicure and free babysitting.
