Self-Service Upgrade

Update #1 - 12/2/2014 - Self-Service Downtime for Upgrade Announced

Greetings,

Please read this important announcement concerning Self-Service (https://selfservice.rts.edu) and Course Home Page. This will be the first of a series of emails you will receive throughout the month of December.  It is important that you read through these emails in their entirety.

Starting the morning of December 17 at 10 am eastern, the Self-Service website will be taken offline for a major upgrade.  It will not be available again until December 22 at 10 am eastern.  It is possible the website may be available sooner, however, because this upgrade impacts the underlying databases it may take a few days before we open it up to everyone as to allow for any troubleshooting of issues that may occur with a major upgrade.

A core component of Self-Service is Course Home Page (CHP).  The CHP is where students frequently access syllabi, PowerPoints, or other resources that professors make available electronically.  Our vendor is discontinuing support for this component in 2015.  As a result, this upgrade also brings the retirement of CHP.  If you wish to save anything out of CHP from the present Fall 2014 courses, or past terms, you must do so prior to December 17 at 10 am eastern.  After that point, all CHPs will be inaccessible.

The Course Home Page functionality is being replaced with Canvas by Instructure.  If you have taken a distance education course recently, you may already be familiar with Canvas.  Canvas will begin being accessible to students on January 5 for their residential Winter 2015 classes.  Further documentation and instructions concerning Canvas will be coming later this month.

To help tie Self-Service and Canvas together, you will be required to create a new login within Self-Service when the new Self-Service website launches.  It is important that you request your new Self-Service account as soon as you are able after the upgrade is complete, especially if you are taking Winter 2015 courses.  This login will be moving us toward offering a “same sign on” for a variety of systems RTS offers its students, the first two being Self-Service and Canvas.  Further instructions concerning this will be sent closer to the launch of the new Self-Service website.

If you have any immediate questions or concerns, please email sis.info@rts.edu and someone will respond.

Sincerely,

Mike Copening

Update #2 - 12/15/2014 - Instructions for Account Creation Starting Dec. 22nd

Greetings,

This is the second important announcement concerning the forthcoming Self-Service upgrade.  Please read this email in its entirety.  To read the prior announcements, please visit this page (http://rts.edu/site/newsevents/ssupgrade.aspx).

Key Dates Summary:

Dec. 17 - Self-Service taken offline at 10 am eastern
Dec. 22 - Self-Service launched, start creating new login accounts
Jan. 5 - Winter 2015 courses available in Canvas

Starting on December 22, you will need to request a new account in Self-Service.  This account will be Active Directory based and provides a framework in which we can connect your login to other systems in the future, such as Canvas.  This will help limit how many distinct logins you use at RTS.  Your old login, when Self-Service is turned off on December 17, will no longer be valid.

It is very important that you create your account as soon as possible following the launch of the new Self-Service.  This will help limit downtime or problems accessing Canvas starting January 5.  In order to be successfully enrolled in courses in Canvas, your Self-Service account will have to have been created.  The following link will give you a step by step guide on how to properly create your account.

http://rts.edu/site/newsevents/ssrequestaccount.aspx

You will need to know your student ID number and provide your date of birth, first name, and last name as it appears in our database.  You will also need a valid email address to be on file.  You must be sure to set up a security question and answer when you create your account.  You may not be prompted on first login to supply this information, so you will need to add it manually as outlined in the instructions above.  Password resets will be handled by Self-Service by answering the question correctly.  If you forget the answer to your question or do not set one up, you will have to contact the IT department for assistance in resetting the password.

You can login to Self-Service presently to review which email is on file and confirm your student ID number, first name, and last name.  Theoretically, your present login username should be your student ID number.  Simply login and click the "My Profile" tab.  Next, on the list of horizontal links below the tabs, click "Account Information" and it will display how your name is formatted, your student ID (system ID), and the email address on file.  If your name is incorrect, contact your local campus registrar for assistance.  If your email is incorrect, you may simply change it and hit save.

Further information concerning Canvas will be released as we get closer to January 1.  Canvas will not be down and will still be accessible during the Self-Service upgrade.  Your present logins in Canvas (if you are already using it) will not be impacted by the Self-Service downtime.  Your logins will eventually change from what they are now to the same as the Self-Service login.  More details concerning the timeframe of this transition will be made available later this month.

If you encounter any problems creating your account or logging into Self-Service starting December 22, please email password.reset@rts.edu.  Please supply in the email your student ID, date of birth, and first and last names.

As one last reminder again, if you want to save anything out of Course Home Page (CHP) within Self-Service, you have until December 17 at 10 am eastern to do so.  You will not be able to access Course Home Page after this point in time.

If you have any general questions or concerns about the forthcoming upgrade, please email sis.info@rts.edu.

Sincerely,

Mike Copening

Update #3 - 12/22/2014 - Self-Service Launched

Greetings,

This is the third important announcement concerning the Self-Service upgrade.  Please read this email in its entirety.  To read past updates, please visit http://rts.edu/site/newsevents/ssupgrade.aspx.

The new version of Self-Service has launched.  It is located at the same address as before, https://selfservice.rts.edu.  You may now start creating your new accounts.  It is important that you create your account as soon as possible if you are an existing distance education student, global campus student, or taking January 2015 courses at your local campus.  On January 5, your login account for Canvas will become the same as your Self-Service account.  If you have not created your Self-Service login account prior to January 5, you will not be able to login to Canvas on January 5.

For a step-by-step guide in setting up your login account in Self-Service, please visit http://rts.edu/site/newsevents/ssrequestaccount.aspx.

Please be sure to follow the instructions for setting up a security question and answer, as that is essential for helping you reset your password should you forget it in the future.  If you encounter any issues, please email password.reset@rts.edu and include your student ID number, date of birth, first name, and last name in the email.  We will help create your account if you have problems, reset passwords, and answer any questions you may have concerning Self-Service.

Lastly, if you have any questions concerning Canvas or Self-Service, please email sis.info@rts.edu

Sincerely,

Mike Copening
