Depression and Suffering: Finding Hope and Healing for Ourselves and Others

Monday, January 18, 6:30PM – 8:30PM, RTS Charlotte

Please join us on Monday, January 18th from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM for a workshop to equip the Charlotte community to engage with the culture around them, especially in the area of depression and suffering.

Melancholy… the blues… a stubborn darkness… Job. Or, as Psalm 25 puts it, “I am lonely and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged. Bring me out of my distresses. Consider my affliction and my trouble.” So many factors, so many distresses weigh into the complex human experience of depression. And we don’t want to treat strugglers the way Job’s counselors treated him. Dr. Powlison will address the layers of experience revealed in depression, and the way faithful Christians can act and speak in seeking to be helpful. This workshop will seek to develop skills in wisely understanding depression and in lovingly walking alongside others to bring the hope and healing of Jesus Christ.

Dr. Powlison serves as Executive Director of CCEF (Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation), editor of The Journal of Biblical Counseling, and a counselor for over 30 years. He has written numerous articles on counseling and on the relationship between faith and psychology, and his books include Speaking Truth in Love, Seeing with New Eyes, and The Biblical Counseling Movement: History and Context.
